Simple Bridal Bouquets Biography

We have talked a little bit about wedding transport recently at Rock My Wedding and I must admit that Rebecca and Chulanga’s choice of a Bentley S type would certainly have made it onto my top 5 wedding car list, if only I had seen it in time. It is simply one of the most elegant looking cars I have ever seen, and in that gun metal metallic finish it just looks awesome. I can so see myself tootling back and forth to RMW towers everyday in one of these beauties.
So, anyway – I’ve bought myself a lottery ticket!
It’s not just the car that is noteworthy here – the attention to every single detail of this rustic english country garden affair is staggering, from the recurrent Wuthering Heights theme to the bespoke yorkshire ale labels created for favours.
Rock My Wedding sponsor Eliza Claire seemed like the obvious choice when deciding who should capture all of this vintage inspired wedding pretty, and she has done a simply stunning job.
Oh, and of course then there is the teepee… But I suppose I ought to let Rebecca tell at least some of the story…
01 A Simple Yorkshire Lass.
England Vs Australia
Chulanga was born in Sri Lanka and has lived in Zambia, England and Australia. I am a simple Yorkshire lass living in London! So when it came to deciding where we would get married the world was our oyster however we both love the English countryside and decided there was no better place to have our wedding than Yorkshire, not to mention it would make life easier for one side of the family to attend!
As family and friends would be coming from all over the world we decided to hire six cottages at Fountains Abbey for the long weekend where we would also host an England vs Australia International ‘Friendly’ cricket match and afternoon tea the day after the wedding. We also had an informal do the night before. In hindsight this was probably a step too far for me as I was somewhat exhausted from all the wedding preparations. Luckily I was so tired that I slept like a log and was fine and dandy for the big day.
Our wedding ceremony was held at All Saints’ Church, Kirby Hill, Boroughbridge – a beautiful, intimate, Grade I Listed church with Saxon origins. As we didn’t have any connections with the parish we had to attend the church twice a month for six months prior to getting married. This was quite an undertaking as we live in London but it was well worth it and it was the drives through the countryside every other Sunday that set the scene for our wedding and influenced us from the start.
The church was just the right size for the number of guests and we invited our immediate members of family to sit in the choir stalls so we were facing them during our vows. This made the occasion feel all the more personal and relaxed while retaining the formalities.
Following the ceremony we had the reception at Newby Hall and Gardens near Ripon – a magnificent, grand but homely venue set in formal and relaxed grounds. As we wanted the reception to celebrate the magnificent rural surroundings, the guests were welcomed at Newby Hall for a champagne reception on the terrace before we all walked down to the River Ure where we had a teepee set on the lawns – a tranquil setting with fabulous views and the most amazing backdrop of the Hall.
As quite a lot of the guests were staying in the Fountains Abbey cottages we arranged for a vintage bus to collect them and take them to the church and then on to Newby Hall. The bus was beautiful and I wish I had been able to join everyone on it but obviously that was not possible so we organised a gorgeous Bentley ‘S’ type to take me and my parents to the church.
02 A Simple Yorkshire Lass.
Beautiful, Stunning and Elegant
My dress was by Vera Wang from Vera Wang at Brown’s Bride, London.
Chulanga proposed to me on New Year’s Eve so I only had 8 months to find my dress. I never had an ‘ideal’ dress in mind so I really had to start from scratch with magazines and websites. Friends advised me to book as many appointments as possible and get trying on. This proved to be invaluable as many lovely dresses suited me but simply didn’t feel right on. To be honest I didn’t revel in trying on all the dresses and found it pretty stressful as I simply couldn’t find anything that floated my boat or was what I thought I wanted at the time. At the same time as dress hunting we were building a bigger picture of how we wanted the big day to be which was also important to bear in mind when looking for the dress.
I concluded that apart from wanting the dress to be beautiful, stunning and elegant it had to be suitable for a country wedding, timeless yet with hints of a bygone era (20′s/30′s), have a slight edge but be classic – quite a tall order!
Sixty dresses later I found two – typical! With only a matter of days to decide due to the order dates and with only a mild gut reaction I ended up writing a list of pros and cons for each dress.
I have to admit that I would not have tried on the dress I bought if it wasn’t for the amazing assistant at Vera Wang as the dress did not suit the hanger. Once it was on it was so comfortable and flattering and the simplest of detail gave it the twist I was looking for without detracting from the classic timeless style. I also never thought I’d end up with a Vera Wang dress which was a bit of a kick in itself!
