Are you getting married? Does your stomach churn at the thought of paying the insane prices for fresh flowers? My stomach certainly did! The whole ordeal was stressful for me which is why I'm compelled to share this with you. You're going to love, love, love this idea. Just keep following and I promise it'll be worth it.
I love fresh cut flowers as much as the next girl but don't love the idea, or reality of dropping a few thousand dollars on flowers that will be wilted and dead tomorrow.
I began pondering the idea of silk flowers and gathered opinions whether silk flowers were tacky or not. To my surprise most everyone thought using silk was a fantastic idea! Then came the part of analyzing costs on this genius idea. I found out  hiring a silk florist wasn't any cheaper than using a fresh flower florist.
I decide to make them myself!!! Genius!!!
I liked the simplicity of a nosegay style. Pictured below.....
Inspiration
Lets get down to business now!
• Pick your color palette
• Head to Michael's with a coupon. Sunday paper ALWAYS has coupons for this store.
You will need the following items.
-flowers for the amount of bouquets you'll be designing.
-complimentary greenery
-wire in the floral section
-hot glue gun/sticks
-coordinating ribbon or a pretty fabric
-rhinestones or an embellishment that you might like (optional)
-wire cutters
-green floral tape, it's very sticky but useful in designing and covering those pesky pokey pieces that'll poke through.
Once your home set up your workspace by grouping each item together in an assembly line type of way.
Okey Dokey here's where the fun and real work comes in.
Step 1: Pick up the flowers you'll be using for one bouquet and start cutting the long stems- leaving just enough to peek
through the bottom of your hand where you'll be holding it. It should be long enough to wrap your hand securely
around the base with a 1/2 to inch at the bottom. Always snip on the side of longer rather than to short!
Step 2: Get your flowers placed where you like them. The arrangement doesn't have to be perfect but the general shape needs
to be in place at this point.
Step 3: Using florist wire start winding around the base of the stems. This will secure the arrangement well enough to
manipulate the flowers.
Step 4: Now that you've got your bouquet secured you can move individual stems up or down to give height to your bouquet.
Bend the head of the flowers and remember that the bouquet will be held right at waist level. This part will take some
time but once you get you technique down you're gonna breeze through the remaining arrangements. It took me over
three hours to finish the first bridesmaids arrangement and the remaining six were finished in under that.
Step 5: If you've chosen to use greenery you want to start placing stems underneath. Glue is your friend! You can tuck pieces
under the base and hot glue those babies in. If leaves are spreading apart and you want to layer. Glue an edge to a
neighboring leaf. No one will know the difference.
Step 6: With wire cutters trim the stems again as evenly as possible and wrap with florist tape.
Step 7: Now that you have the general shape of the major part of your bouquet in place it's time to start covering the unsightly
stems with ribbon or fabric. Cut a piece long enough to put at the very bottom of the stems and hot glue it on. Skip
this if you want stems showing. I didn't like the way the plastic stems looked so I covered them.
Step 8: Starting just underneath the base of the flowers hot glue a piece of ribbon/fabric to your bouquet. Slowly wind ribbon
all the way down the stems. At this time you can also cut strips of ribbon fabric into four or so inch strips. Fold in half
and glue them up underneath the base of the flowers. You could be creative here and leave trailing pieces. I did this
because the flowers were scratchy on top of my hand. Be creative and experiment to find what suits your tastes.
Step 9: Now that you have the general bouquet put together you can start adding sparkly things to your flower petals. Add
charms at the base of the stems. You can use pearls in the center of each flower bud. The possibilities are endless.
You can incorporate dried flowers or a few fresh flowers to be added on the day of your wedding.
Since we were married at a Moroccan styled resort I opted to use colors that were earthy and warm. Pastel pinks or lavenders would've clashed terribly with the desert oasis style. Everything turned out beautifully and inexpensive. Although, part of me still wishes to have been able to use soft romantic colors. Someday I will maybe in a vow renewal ceremony.
Approximate expense: $300 with an average of 6 hours spent making the bouquets. Fresh bouquets would've been double that. Boutonnieres at five dollars apiece and made with left over flowers cost $50 vs. $150. 2 corsages cost $14 vs. $70. All stems were purchased at 50% off or more with coupons from the paper. Always buy more than you need!!!!!!! It's far better to have to much than not enough!!! Always, always, always! You can return your unused stuff.
Right about now you're probably wondering about boutonnieres. Michael's silk florist will design them for $5 each when you bring in the flowers, ribbons and stems you want incorporated into the boutonnieres. You can look through a catalogue with various boutonniere designs. Corsages for mothers are a couple of dollars more.
I hope you enjoy and get inspired to make something beautiful for your special day too. Please share your creations with me and share my link with others. My next post will be how to design and cut cost on wedding centerpieces.
Here are some photos of our wedding:
Black gowns were chosen for the BM's for several reasons...Everyone looks great in black whereas not everyone would feel comfortable nor look good in other colors, everyone could wear their gown again for any formal event and the gowns were under $100 each! Sure I liked many other gowns but my BM's were wearing the gowns not me! I tried to consider how each one would feel and I think they were all pleased they didn't end up in taffeta puffy dresses like mine.
